Yogis practised a LOT. Their lifestyles were not desk-based. Commuting by car for hours and plogging were not “things”.
- So, if you cannot bend like a gymnast (or a yogi), don’t be surprised.
- You can still do yoga asanas.
- Yes, it takes practice.
- You need to adapt to your body, learn where you are at, decide where you want to go!
As a starting point, take a look at some alternatives to backbends; ideal for those not so familiar with literally bending over backwards i.e. most of the population!). As a desk-based worker, or a mum, or someone who is not doing a lot to keep core strength you need to know what is possible for you right now without putting your back out.
